SPADE MUSINGS

Another video-article on Noa: Birthday greetings (5 year old at the 11th of Nov 2012)

Noa on the red Bluthner Grand Piano anno1899This is not just another bird. This is Noa, the budgie prodigy, the jet plane aviator and – with words – the self-proclaimed avatar of the family. He is the runaway budgie that returns home at sunset, like a pigeon.

The thought of Noa fills us with deep appreciation. We in the family loved him very much and it was a sad day when Noa flied of to “heaven” 29th of July 2015, after almost 8 very active years as the chief entertainer of the family. The rest of this text was written when Noa was still alive and kicking.

Noa was nothing else if not an original. He could put his imagination to work, and he was an entertaining expressionist and a true comedian. Strange words to describe a bird, and yet …
For a quick at a glance first impression, watch the HummingBird video below, which is an alphabetical collection of (mostly) timeless and precious Noa quotes, even if twittered as early as during May and June of 2008.

Noa was born at the 11th of November 2007.   Stabæk fotball Noa undulat

There is a lot of talk about Stabak, which is the local soccer club. Without a doubt, Noa present himself as a dedicated fan. There is a constant flow of announcements, viewpoints, not to mention salutes in all variations for that favorite of his.

These encouragements are a laugh because of their intensity and general genuineness. Some of these statements are quite sensational to come from a bird, but we should perhaps mention that there are 3 youngsters in this house, all playing for Stabak.

Regardless, Noa is surely one huge Stabak fan. Hard to beat, there.
Note: If you should think that this “just isn’t possible; for a bird to talk like that”, then take a look at the advanced examples link below, containing normal video clips. IOW, it IS Noa speaking.

There are 2 interesting (very talkative) and fresh videos released on a blog in connection with Noa’s 5 year birthday. We have provided a preliminary analysis of Noa and what’s going on with this “crazy” bird, also containing a few “next level” recordings of Noa.

Noa has (had) his own Twitter account with his “best of” quotes, updated from time to time. Most of these are in Norwegian language, but there are glimpses of English and French, for example at 9:20 into the Hummingbird video. This page is nevertheless in English language because anyone should be able to enjoy the tone & flavour of Noa’s talks.

Most of Noa’s speeches takes the form of a dialogue between 3 or more distinct voices, stamped in his twittering as voice 1: 2: and so forth. These voices are incognito, but still recognizable due a unique tone and a “personal” tone. In other words, this is seemingly a kind of role play with a more or less fixed cast of “actors”.

Noa talks for hours every day. In fact, extracts from only one single day of his fast&furious talk shows would be enough material to fill his Twitter account for a year with humoresques of all sorts.

Noa on the shoulder, in the garden Warning: Do not take your own budgie outside, it will surely run away and the chances your bird will return safely is less than slim. In Norwegian language: Advarsel: Aldri ta din fugl med ut, den vil fly avgårde og sjansene for å se den igjen er meget små.

Nevertheless, here is Noa-the-special-one on Hanne Mette’s shoulder, outside in the backyard in the summer of 2008. Noa was 8 months old at the time. He ran away for the first time a few days later when the temptation became to big. In total, Noa was on the loose no less than four times.

Amazingly, he always came home, either by the help of other people, or, the last time, by flying home! Actually, Noa has been on the run no less than four times, sometimes for several days, sometimes in the middle of the winter. The last time “on the wings” was the summer of 2012.

That’s an amazing story because he ran away in the morning due to human mistake, but returned by himself in the afternoon, at sunset. He came gliding back and landed safely on Hanne Mette’s shoulder and we all went inside.

Noa was followed by a human crowd during the day, flying from tree to tree in pure joy, and it was really amazing to watch him fly. What an elegant. He dared to claim the sky, literally speaking. And most of all, there was tremendous speed!

Hard to believe? Well, it became an escape manoeuvre with the local newspaper being with us the whole day, monitoring the chase “live”. That setup was arranged by Noa, because he took a one hour “nap” in the pine tree in the garden of a local journalist.

Here is the story which is probably totally unique. The title says: “Noa the budgie is on the loose again”. The story is not available on Internet. To our understanding the following applies for budgies: After a runaway, budgies don’t fly home! They don’t know how. They are not pigeons.

Has it ever happened before?  In this article, take a note of Noa in the pine tree in the rightmost picture. By the way, many thanks to the journalist Astrid Sæther from Dalsbygda, who changed her day and joined us in the “chase” to create the documentary. We were actually quite calm during the day, we sort of “knew” there was a happy ending in the pipeline.

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings

by Maya Angelou

The free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wings
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings
with fearful trill
of the things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom

The free bird thinks
of another breeze
and the trade winds soft
through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting
on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands
on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts
on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped
and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.
